I insist all the time I have one of the best jobs going. I get to read outstanding literature, discuss intense thought provoking editorials, and analyze ground breaking current events.

I get to study great authors and guide blooming writers.

I get to organize “Math Madness” to correlate with March Madness, teach an enrichment course that combines mathematics and fantasy football, and throw touchdowns at recess.

And I get to have summers free to spend time with my family and expand my knowledge of other cultures through traveling and attending various summer courses.

After graduation from Saint Mary’s High School in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1990 it was off to Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. My teaching career began in 1995 and continues in the fifth grade. I am currently working towards a Masters in Curriculum Design through the University of Phoenix.

As part of my Professional Development growth, I took classes in NYC learning from nationally known reading and writing experts Lucy Culkins, Carl Anderson, Ralph Fletcher, Georgia Heard, Lester Laminack, and Katie W. Ray at Columbia University in Harlem, New York.

The highlight of my teaching career so far has been creating a mosaic American Flag during math class made from foil and markers on the ceiling of our classroom, as a tribute to heroes following 9/11. The final product was outstanding, but the process was a thing of beauty. We made the whole experience into an inspirational documentary. The video showed how the children were immersed in mathematics by involving them in activities, explorations, and experiments. BUT more importantly, it showed the true American spirit. Or the highlight might have been stapling my finger during a literature discussion when my Mom was in town visiting my classroom.

My wife is a fine artist and graphic designer. We have a daughter, 7, son, 3, and a baby boy. During our time together, we love to read, explore in the woods, play games, travel and attend sporting events.

Coach John Wooden is one of my biggest influences in the classroom.
